July 18, 2026: A husky didnโt hesitate to intimidate and chase away a bear from a 6-year-old boy when the wild animal appeared near the driveway of a Connecticut home earlier this month.

Bella the husky saves a 6-year-old boy as she chases a wild bear across the driveway of a Connecticut home.
This week, Bella, an 11-year-old husky, was honored by the Connecticut General Assembly.
Reading a proclamation in a recording captured by WTNH, state Rep. Joe Canino said: โConnecticut General Assembly hereby offers its sincerest congratulations to Bella in recognition of the demonstration of bravery and loyalty in the face of danger. Bella courageously warded off a charging bear many times her size to protect her family. Her actions embodied the enduring phrase: โA dog is a manโs best friend.โโ

A video of the July 4 encounter in Torrington went viral after WTNH shared it on July 6.

Jeffrey Tazzara, father of 6-year-old Colton, recalled the alarming event: โThe kids were out in the garage while I was loading the car and Bella let out a bark and I turned around. There was a bear running in my sonโs direction and Bella giving chase. She ended up catching it about halfway into the driveway and chasing it into the woods.โ
Bella Benignly Barked at Bears Before
Bella the husky has spotted bears before, but always from the safe vantage point of inside the home while looking out a window.
The bear is probably part of a family of bears thatโs been roaming the neighborhood and rummaging in trash cans for a year or so, Tazzara added.
โSheโs always barking at the bears from inside, and Iโm always like, โBella what are you going to do? If I let (you) out, youโre going to turn around and run,โโ Tazarra said.
But Bella the husky is braver than he thought.
โNow we know that sheโs not going to cower, so itโs good to know with the young kids,โ Tazzara said.

Tazzara noted how fitting it was to honor a husky in Connecticut, home of the UConn Huskies.
While this situation was incredible, heartwarming, and heroic, officials at the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection added that it is best for pets to be kept away from bears.
