July 18, 2026: A husky didnโ€™t hesitate to intimidate and chase away a bear from a 6-year-old boy when the wild animal appeared near the driveway of a Connecticut home earlier this month.

Bella the husky saves a 6-year-old boy as she chases a wild bear across the driveway of a Connecticut home.

This week, Bella, an 11-year-old husky, was honored by the Connecticut General Assembly.

Reading a proclamation in a recording captured by WTNH, state Rep. Joe Canino said: โ€œConnecticut General Assembly hereby offers its sincerest congratulations to Bella in recognition of the demonstration of bravery and loyalty in the face of danger. Bella courageously warded off a charging bear many times her size to protect her family. Her actions embodied the enduring phrase: โ€˜A dog is a manโ€™s best friend.โ€™โ€

A video of the July 4 encounter in Torrington went viral after WTNH shared it on July 6.

Jeffrey Tazzara, father of 6-year-old Colton, recalled the alarming event: โ€œThe kids were out in the garage while I was loading the car and Bella let out a bark and I turned around. There was a bear running in my sonโ€™s direction and Bella giving chase. She ended up catching it about halfway into the driveway and chasing it into the woods.โ€

Bella Benignly Barked at Bears Before

Bella the husky has spotted bears before, but always from the safe vantage point of inside the home while looking out a window.

The bear is probably part of a family of bears thatโ€™s been roaming the neighborhood and rummaging in trash cans for a year or so, Tazzara added.

โ€œSheโ€™s always barking at the bears from inside, and Iโ€™m always like, โ€˜Bella what are you going to do? If I let (you) out, youโ€™re going to turn around and run,โ€™โ€ Tazarra said.

But Bella the husky is braver than he thought.

โ€œNow we know that sheโ€™s not going to cower, so itโ€™s good to know with the young kids,โ€ Tazzara said.

Tazzara noted how fitting it was to honor a husky in Connecticut, home of the UConn Huskies.

While this situation was incredible, heartwarming, and heroic, officials at the state Department of Energy & Environmental Protection added that it is best for pets to be kept away from bears.
