August 18, 2026: Every Monday evening in Detroit, the music begins, white canes are set within reach, and a roomful of dancers waits for Lady J to call the first move.
There are no mirrors. No one watches the instructorโs feet. In this dance class, everyone learns by listening, trusting, and feeling the rhythm beneath them.
โI am a dancer,โ Lady J proudly tells the room. โI came to dance.โ
Six years ago, a detached retina in her left eye caused complications that permanently damaged her vision. Suddenly, even familiar movements became unfamiliar. She could no longer see well enough to learn the hustle dances everyone else was doing.
But Lady J was not ready to stop dancing.
So she began creating steps of her own.
โI began to make up my own hustles because I didnโt have enough sight to learn the hustles everybody else was doing,โ she told FOX 2 Detroit.
Eventually, she gave herself a fitting name: โThe Blind Hustler.โ

It is more than a nickname. It is a declaration that losing one way of experiencing life does not mean losing every source of joy within it.
โLady J is out there hustling again,โ she said.
Now, she is making sure others can hustle, too.
Blind Students Feeling the Rhythm
Every Monday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Lady J welcomes people who are blind or have low vision to dance with her at the Disability Network. The organization connects people with disabilities to resources, support, and one another.
About 15 dancers come together each week. They listen closely to the music, follow Lady Jโs voice, and learn to trust their bodies again… feeling the rhythm as they learn.
For some, the most important thing they rediscover is not rhythm. It is happiness.
โIt was hard being blind and dancing,โ Lady J said. โAnd now, theyโre out listening to music, being able to relate to the music, coming together, socializing, being happy again.โ
Passersby sometimes stop when they notice the dancersโ canes. They watch people they may have underestimated laughing, moving, and filling the room with life.
First comes surprise: They are blind, and they are dancing.
Then comes the realization: Of course they are dancing. Joy was never meant only for those who can see it.
Lady J understands that losing her vision changed her journey. She also understands that it did not end it.

โThis is not an easy journey,โ she said. โBut if youโre going through the same thing Iโm going through, you can make it.โ
Her students may not be able to see the next step, but together, they take it anyway, feeling the rhythm as they go.
That may be Lady Jโs most beautiful lesson. None of us can truly see everything that lies ahead. A diagnosis, a loss, or a sudden change can erase the future we once imagined. When that happens, we may believe the music has stopped.
But sometimes, life is simply asking us to listen more closely.
Lady J could not keep dancing the way she once had, so she created a new dance. Then she reached back for others and taught them the steps.
โIโm telling yโall, it does not stop here,โ she said.
The Bright Side
Courage does not always mean knowing exactly where your next step will land. Sometimes it means feeling the rhythm, trusting that you are not alone, and moving forward before you can see the way.
When life changes the music, we can stop dancing, or we can become like Lady J: find a new beat, invite others onto the floor, and turn what we lost into a reason someone else finds joy again.
Lady J now hopes to open a dance studio dedicated to people who are blind or have low vision. Those wishing to help her dream take its next step can support her at GoFundMe.
Classes are held Mondays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 7800 West Outer Drive in Detroit.
