Dogs Are Reading the Room

August 18, 2026: Your dog may not understand every word you say, but new research suggests they are remarkably good at reading your face.

Scientists trained awake pet dogs to remain still during MRI scans while viewing photos of unfamiliar people looking happy, angry, sad or afraid. Happy faces produced stronger activity in areas of the dogs’ brains associated with social interaction and reward, USA Today reports.

The dogs’ brain patterns distinguished happiness from negative expressions. They even responded differently to fear than to anger or sadness, although researchers caution that this does not necessarily mean dogs understand emotions exactly as humans do. The small study also involved mostly border collies, so more research is needed, according to the findings published in iScience.

Still, the next time your dog studies your face, remember: They may be doing more than waiting for a treat. They’re probably reading the room.
