Miracle Calf Survives Against All Odds

07/12/26

July 12, 2026: Dick Pantzke noticed something was off two months ago when he was in the pasture on his farm in Little Falls, Minn.

โ€œIt just didnโ€™t look right,โ€ he told the Morrison County Record.

He came upon a prematurely born calf motionless on the ground, her mother already moving away, rejecting the newborn that she probably thought was dying or dead.

Newborn calves are usually 60 to 90 pounds with full sets of teeth and hooves.

This diminutive newborn was a delicate and vulnerable 13 pounds. Toothless and with spongy, miniscule nubbins instead of hooves, the farmer expected her to die as most newborn calves do.

Still, he picked her up and brought her indoors to clean her. He named her Millie, and it wasnโ€™t long before she started to move and kick.

Pantzke brought her a bottle of her motherโ€™s milk, and she drank it from a 1-foot-long bottle. When the bottle was standing, it was taller than Millie.

That was two months ago.

Against all odds, Millie was the first premature calf on Pantzkeโ€™s farm to survive.

Miracle Calf to Live Out Days on the Farm

The veterinarian who saw Millie four days after her birth was amazed she survived, Pantzke recalled.

The vet said her deformed head and the blood in her manure meant she could have neurological problems and also likely had organs that werenโ€™t fully formed.

But she grew; her head took on a normal shape, her teeth and hooves came in strong, and her internal organs developed.

She is tiny compared to other calves her age, but she has a healthy appetite.

The cows on Pantzkeโ€™s farm are normally destined to wind up on dinner plates.

But that wonโ€™t be Millieโ€™s fate.

She is too sweet, too remarkable and too resilient for her story to end that way.

Millie the miracle calf is destined to live out her days on the farm, Pantzke said.

Sheโ€™s part of the family now.
