At most high school proms, one of the biggest thrills of the night is finding out who will take home the crown of Prom King.
At Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma, this year’s crowning moment meant something more.
As students gathered to celebrate, they erupted in cheers for a surprise honoree: their principal, Kirk Moore. Just days earlier, Moore had stepped into a moment no one ever wants to face, and acted without hesitation.
On April 7, when a gunman entered the school lobby, Moore tackled and disarmed him. In the process, he was shot in the leg. Because of his quick action, no students were injured.
By this past Friday night, the community had found a way to say thank you.
Video from the prom shows Moore walking forward, greeted by high fives, applause, and the kind of joy that only comes from shared relief. When the crown was placed on his head, it wasn’t just a lighthearted tradition… it was a recognition of courage, selflessness, and the quiet responsibility he carries every day.
In the aftermath of something frightening, a school chose to celebrate something powerful: the presence of someone willing to step in when it mattered most.
The Bright Side
We don’t often get to choose the moments that define us, but we do choose how we show up in them. And sometimes, the truest measure of leadership isn’t found in titles or ceremonies…
but in the instinct to protect others, no matter the cost.
