August 7, 2026: When the funding for an Arizona middle school’s last hurrah of the summer suddenly disappeared, School Resource Officer Sean Reavie jumped into action.
“You can’t break a promise to a child,” Reavie told 12News KPNX.
No, he didn’t track down those responsible for the promised trip falling through.
He simply opened his wallet and paid for the trip: a theater showing of Toy Story 5, complete with popcorn, candy, and drinks, for more than 100 students.
He said he felt sad when he saw the students’ expressions as they learned the original trip had to be cancelled.
So, he rented out a 144-seat theater near Greenway Middle School in Phoenix and made sure all of the 7th- and 8th-graders in the “After the Bell” summer program could experience the movie together.
School Resource Officer has been the hero before
Some of the students had never been to a movie theater before, and some receive free breakfast and lunch from the school, according to Godtube.
“Some of them live in a different life than most of us would comprehend,” Reavie said. “Their family doesn’t have a car. Parents, if they have two, work multiple jobs. Half of them have never been to a water park before. They’ve never been across the other side of the highway before.”
Last year, Reavie gave $3,000 so students could enjoy a nearby water park. Before the movie began this year, Reavie spoke to the students: “As you get older in life, help other people as a payback to me. Would you do that? That’s all I ask.”
