Back in April 2026, the Trust for Public Land solidified their support and protection of 213 acres of natural landscape along the coast of Lake Superior’s South Shore. The move was an effort to ensure that Lake Superior’s lands remain safe from private development, keeping corporations and businesses from staking their claim on these protected lands.

Will Cooksey, Senior Project Manager for Trust for Public Land, emphasizes the natural beauty of Lake Superior Falls and the importance of keeping its land free from corporate interests. “Lake Superior Falls represents the very best of Americaโ€™s natural heritage โ€” clean water, rugged beauty, and a place where people can connect with the outdoors. By protecting this landscape, we are ensuring that it remains open, accessible, and unspoiled for generations to come.”

Unsurprisingly, the land along the South Shore has major significance for those indigenous to the area. The Flambeau Trail — named for the Lac Du Flambeau Ojibwe band of Lake Superior Chippewa — acted as a trade route for fur traders from 1808-1830. As tends to be the case with much indigenous land, the trail and the surrounding area has been a highly contested stretch.

With the Trust for Public Land and Wisconsin’s efforts, Lake Superior’s coast will continue to thrive, grow, and remain a lush landscape.

Wisconsin governor Tony Evers said, โ€œConservation and protecting our natural resources are core to who we are as Wisconsinites โ€” itโ€™s in our DNA. … With this acquisition, we can continue to build on our work to conserve the beautiful and unique natural spaces here in Wisconsin while bolstering our highly successful outdoor recreation economy and ensuring these spaces are accessible for generations of Wisconsinites and visitors to come.โ€

This is what people can do when they truly value we world around us. When leading with empathy and gratitude for what the Creator has bestowed upon us, we are fully capable of protecting nature’s gift.
